*15,000 die in heat wave?

Posted on September 10, 2003

How could this happen? I realize you don’t get heat like that in France very often and most people do not have air conditioning, but do you have house fans? Is basic heat safety not common knowledge?

Why doesn’t there seem to be more outrage? 104 degrees doesn’t seem hot enough to kill 15,000 people to me. In my area of the U.S.A. we had 20 days of more than 110 in the month of July alone, yes it broke records but we were not loosing people to the heat left and right.

Is your government planning on making any changes so this does not happen again? 15,000 deaths in France would be like 90,000 in America. Does anyone here think there would be a politician alive who’s head was not being called for if this happened in America?

And I read most of the deaths were elderly. Does your country have elder care such as home health care, nursing homes, asisted living? I know on the really hot days here (very small town) we checked on some of our elderly neighbors, make sure their a/c was working, that they were drinking enough fluids, eating, getting their medicine, etc.

This is just baffling to me.

Yo I thought it was 3,000.

I heard about the same thing and I was wonderin how so many people died too… Someone told me its because they dont have air con, and shower everyday like people in the U.S. so thats probably why.

    sad times

The French pay high prices for energy. Gas runs around $5 a gallon. Like in many of our northern states, air conditioning is not a necessity. Why pay for an air conditioner when you only need it for one month a year&if that? What happened in France was a tragic freak event.

Yea, most people in France, and in Germany aswell dont have air conditioning because weather almost never gets that hot to where its needed. So why just waist money on somthing that almost never happen?

I lived in Germany for a little over 3 years, and i dont remember a day it got over 85ยบ

What is the weather usually like in France? Does it get really hot, or is it more cool. Basically, what’s the hottest it usually gets, and what’s the lowest? Does it snow there a lot? Just curious since I might be moving there soon.
