*French Cars?

Posted on September 18, 2003

Hi there, I’m a Driving Instructer from California, and in order to make my classes a little more interesting I do this little game with my students. I was wondering if SOMEONE could tell me what cars that the French people make. I know about Peuget and Renault, but what others are there?
Thank you for your help…

The French also make Citroen. I just returned from Paris and found the cars there fascinating as they are completley different from ours. The cars you see most on Parisian streets are Puegeot, Ciroen, Renault, Mercedes, Fiat, Lancia. Most Taxis are Mercedes or Fiat. Most are manual transmission and they have many deisel models that we never see. Gasoline is around 1.20 p/ litre and diesel is around .90 (euro). The cab that took us from the airport in Rome to downtown (45 minute ride) was a Mercedes E class with a 2.6 liter diesel that had 680,000 km on it and rode like it was new. (could have used a few cosmetics)

Correct spelling (for your students) is Peugeot. The others were spelled correctly. The cars are much smaller than in the US. There is a cute little half car that is all over Paris right now. I’m sorry I didn’t get a name. It looks like someone cut a normal car in half and are using the front half. We never figured out what happened to all those back halves!

You sound like a good teacher.

    SalB:
I think that car may be the "SmartCar" marketed by SWatch. A two seater with minimal luggage space. Regards, Donerail

Yes, it is a SmartCar – because they are so very easy to park, they have been steadily increasing since we first saw one or two three years ago. Another "cute" small car is the Twingo, but I don’t know who manufactures it. Karen

I think Twingo is Renault. We don’t get a car when we just go to Paris. When we’re driving around France (Italy/Spain/Germany), we lease a Peugeot 206 automatic. I don’t drive a stick and am not planning to learn! It’s a nice small car with excellent gas mileage and we really like it. We’ve leased Peugeots for years and had only good experiences with the company. I have seen the Twingo on other web sites though and it is a cute little car.

I really liked the little half car the last time we were in Paris. Often we’d see two of them in one parking place. Wish they would sell something like that in this country. It would double the size of the freeways!! )
