*Public transportation in Burgandy

Posted on April 16, 2009

I will be traveling witrh my wife to France in late September.  We will spend a couple of days in Paris and then take the train to Auxerre.  From there we have to travel to Baye, on the Naivernais canal, for a week's voyage north to Mailly-la-Ville.

It seems next to impossible to find transportation information, including costs, for travel within Burgandy.  Specifically, where can I get  bus schedules and prices for Auxerre to Baye, and for           Mailly-la-Ville to Auxerre?  I would prefer to travel by bus, but failing that, how much must I budget  for for a taxi for each trip?

Any advice will be gratefully accepted.

We always drive so I'm not much help here. I tried checking the train web sites to see if they give bus info and had no luck.

My first suggestion would be to simply rent a car from the train station to wherever you are planning to go. It certainly should be cheaper than a taxi if it is any distance.

If you have arranged a canal boat, you could contact the people there and ask them for transportation options. They can tell you bus options and may offer to pick you up at the train.

To get help from other folks who have done this, I suggest you log onto http://www.virtualtourist.com and ask the question in their travel forum. There are over a million members and many have mentioned canal trips.

Good luck. You are headed to a gorgeous area. We're headed over next week but have leased a car.

Thanks, we, also, have always hired a car; However, because of my age, auto rental agencies are not

likely to continue to rent.  Lost my "legs", or so it would seem.

Obviously it won't help on this trip, but if you stay 17 days or longer, you may lease and age is not a problem. We use the Peugeot Open Europe plan and I know Renault has something similar. You can book them through http://www.autoeurope.com or http://www.autofrance.net/ or you can telephone (in the USA) 1-800-572-9655. We have also used Kemwel to book but I don't have their web site handy.

We've done this for years and love the program. You always get a brand new car and there is 24-hour road service.
