Hi Sarah. You might get more answers if you posted this in the forum instead of as a blog. The forum is to ask questions and a blog is to share some aspect of your life with anyone who cares to read it.
That said, you did ask for advice. First of all, no one can advise you without knowing your citizenship. If you are a US citizen, the rules are completely different from EU citizens. Needless to say, the whole thing will be much easier if you are an EU citizen.
If you are not, the first thing you need to do is get a resident visa and permission to work in France.
Have you visited France? I'm assuming you have since you seem to have settled on the south of France. What kind of place are you looking for besides a "small village/" Do you want to be near the shore, in Provence or Languedoc, in the mountains, east or west, etc.? How small is small? Do you want to be near basic shops like a grocery and a couple restaurants or do you want to get away from it all?
To just get an idea of what kind of accomodation is available in France, you can check http://www.gites-de-france.com/gites/uk/rural_gites and click on the B&B option to see where they are and what they cost. You might even e-mail the Gites de France folks and see if they have any advice for you.
I realize I just asked a lot of questions instead of answering you, but giving this information will make it easier for people to advise you. I certainly hope you realize your dream because we are always looking for good B&Bs in France. 8^)
Thank you for your reply to my entry. Yes of couse I realise now that that must be the best option.
first of all I want to point out that this is a dream for the future. And I have no plans on it coming true this year. Although my first goal is to find a job and to learn the language ang get to know the area. What would be the best way for me to get started?
Now to answer your quetsions:
I have a dual citizenship swedish/english.
I live and work in Stockholm sweden was born and raised here.
The reason for my interest in France is simply that I have been interested in the french culture and language for some time. I dont speak any french neither have I ever been to France.
I understand that getting a place near the shore in the south cant be easy as it is quite a popular area.
What I want is to move to a country village not to far from shops and public transport. I am looking for somewere quiet but still on the move so to speak. To start a B&B its important to have be close to the city buzz and tourists. But what I want to offer is peace and quiet with good quality food and surroundings. I would like to find a place with a grocerystore and perhaps one or two restaurants.
for example I have an interest in Avignon, Provence and Sarlat, Dordogne. I realise that these two places are far from eachother but the idea of these towns is pretty much what I am looking for. But as I want the warm summers and mild winters, and I understand that the south of france is the place to be in that case.
Thank you for your time. Kind regards from Sarah Seamark
?Well, it certainly will be easier for you to move to France since you have Swedish citizenship. I believe that allows you to move to France, purchase a place and run a business without the complications you would have if you were not in the EU.
You probably should start to learn French simply because you will have to deal with estate agents and contracts when you buy or lease a house for your B&B. You should also find a good bilingual attorney (solicitor) to help you.
Do you have an Alliance Francais near you? If so, they have excellent language courses. Vacationing in France a few times will help with the language too.
Staying near the shore is difficult in the southeast but you might consider the southwest. It is much more reasonable and much less developed there. It is also, in my humble opinion, much prettier and unspoiled. The area between Narbonne and the Spanish border has lovely sand beaches, wildlife reserves, a few busy cities, nearby mountains and lots of small towns and villages. The prices are lower there too if that is a consideration.
If you want to stay in the Avignon / Provence area, the beach areas can be overdeveloped, very touristy and expensive. Many of the beaches are stone so not quite as nice as the southwest. In either area, if you are right on the ocean, weather is reasonably nice all year although summers can be brutally hot. If you go inland just a few miles, you will have to deal with winter weather on occasion. The Mistral is a very cold wind and it blows for days on end. We have experienced below freezing weather in the Avignon area several times as early as November. This is unusual and doesn’t last long but it is not all sunshine and roses in the south. This is inland but an easy drive to the sea and it is definitely seasonal tourism.
In the Avignon area, you might consider one of the small towns in the area like St. Remy, Tarascon, Cavaillon or villages like la-Roque-d’Antheron, Lambesc or something similar where there is suitable shopping but you are still near enough Arles, Avignon, Nimes or Aix-en-Provence to do major shopping when you need it.
You might consider using the Gites de France web site I gave you to rent B&Bs or gites for vacations in these areas a few times to see how you feel about each area and where you might be most comfortable.
You should also check the Tourist Bureaus for each place to see what kind of publicity you can expect from them. We often use these tourist bureaus to find apartments or houses to rent while we vacation. Check for that. If they list B&Bs, you can list your own and know people will look at the ads.
There is a British magazine called "France" that is excellent and they offer a separate magazine for people who are interested in investing in French property. You might want to subscribe to one or both of those.
Have fun looking and let me know when you open your B&B.
