In guidebooks I read that French swimming pools require men to wear the tight-fitting, Speedo-style briefs. Is this true of most swimming pools? Why is this? Will I look like really out of place for wearing trunks?

you say that in franch that men are required to wear speedos. i am here to tell you that myth is not true. it is not required , most men just choose to wear speedos. in fact the french were the one that spred the style of tight swim trunks. if you want to know anything more email me lilswimer431@msn.com

I wanted to say that it is the case in the French part of BELGIUM that Shorts are not allowed to swim with !
The french part (french community) has issued this because allot of young people wear their shorts the whole summer. When it gets to cold to swim outside they take their (unwashed) shorts to go swim in a public pool (or aquapark) which is not hygenic… It happened to myself, my short was clean tough, but I had to buy a tight little thing to be allowed to use the pool … the only one that didn’t mind was my girlfriend !!

oh my bad i thought that you were asking if you had to wear speedo shorts,instead of swim trunks. in that case what Q-pid said is right, you can wear anything you want but to swim you have to wear speedo shorts. sorry about the confusion.
