*Weather in Winter

Posted on September 10, 2003

Hi, I was just wondering if anyone can help, re the weather in winter in France.
I am heading over there for 7 weeks in December/January as part of an exchange program and was wondering what sort of clothes are best to take. I am aware that it is around 6/7 degrees celcius but comming from Brisbane, Australia, the lowest we normally get during the day in winter is 22 degrees so its quite a dramatic change!
Thanking you in advance,

it depends where you go, france has differents climates

In Paris the winter temperature is around 8° celcius, winter is rainy

In the mediterranean coast it is milder, around 14°, winter is sunnier

In montains it can be much colder, with snow (O° and below)

    Good trip !

    Hi Morgan,

In a few words, to echo what Fabbrice says, it depends where you will be in France during those months. I’ve lived in France for 7 months (from Oct to May), and in the northern and central part of France, during the winter, the temperature is quite chilly (5 to 8 celcius), but never cold enough that it actually snows. Just be sure to bring along a few jumpers and some warm pants.

If you’re heading down to the Riviera, however, it’s a different story. I was in Nice and also in small town called Menton (edges the French-Italian border) during Christmas, and the weather was much warmer. Temperatures averaged 16-17 celcius at the time.

If it’s your first time in France, dress for the weather (and dress smart if clubbing – the France have high fashion sense), enjoy the best food in the world (though I hope you’re not vegetarian, or you’re in for a surprise…), and have fun!

    Shawn
