A major exhibition dedicated to the influence of the masters of painting on Picasso and his works will be at the Grand Palais from October 8, 2008 through February 2, 2009.
Picasso, as a young man, studied the collections in the Prado and later the Louvre that he frequented often after his arrival in Paris. The exhibit will explore the artist’s work with a new intrepretation of history through the constant themes and subjects found in paintings from ancient to modern.
210 works have been gathered from some of the most prestigious private and public collections in the world. They will be grouped into ten large sections representing the different approaches of Picasso:
- the Academy, Antiques
- French and Spanish painting
- Paris 1900
- the object
- German engravings
- variations
- philosophical disorder
- great nudes
- portraits of seated women
- Tarots, viril portraits
Simultaneously, two important groups of work by Picasso will be assembled by theme at the Louvre around the Women of Algiers by Delacroix and at the Musée d’Orsay around The Luncheon on the Grass by Manet.
The exhibit will be presented by the RMN (Réunion des musées nationaux), le musée national Picasso and the musée du Louvre. For more information, visit: www.rmn.fr and click on "Press release".
